Ekmeles + Attacca Quartet: Last Words
March 27, 2017
The extreme emotional terrain of the Passion story has long inspired composers and continues to do so today. The “brilliant” vocal ensemble Ekmeles (New Yorker) leads a program of classics by Schütz and Haydn (from the “deeply moving” Attacca Quartet, New York Times) interwoven with two strikingly different contemporary accounts – the New York premiere of German master Wolfgang Rihm’s 7 Passion Texts and David Lang’s unforgettable Pulitzer Prize-winning little match girl passion, based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson.
Schütz — Excerpts, Seven Last Words of Christ and St. Matthew Passion
Haydn — Excerpts, Seven Last Words of Christ (version for string quartet)
Wolfgang Rihm — Seven Passion Texts (New York premiere)
David Lang — little match girl passion
